Eating glass and staring into the abyss.

Yes the dark dark abyss. And as Nietzsche said “if you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares back at you“. I started my ‘working’ life as an entrepreneur. Young, wild & starry eyed and filled with ignorance, oh, how little did I know about the world back then.

Starting a company is like eating glass and staring into the abyss, that’s really a part truth about entrepreneurship and being a “business owner”. I first saw this description by Elon Musk and I thought how beautifully he described it. I see that the current trend of being an entrepreneur is “hip”, but little is shown to the challenges and risks to overcome. When I get asked about starting a company, I really question the person on WHY do they want to start a company. As what you are dealing with when starting is a huge amount of uncertainty / risk (which as humans are not wired for) and epic challenges you would have never foreseen. There are periods of fun and periods of WTF is going on. I think you really have to be wired differently to start and end up on the other side being successful.

I love that I am wired that (lucky, indeed). Yes, there were areas / skills I had to improve and manage, but the core of creating something out of nothing, was a big big drive.

“A lot of times people think creating a company is fun. Well there are periods of fun and there are periods of where its just awful. If you are the CEO of a company, you have a distillation of all the worst problems in the company. There is no point spending time on things that are going right, so you only spend time on things that are going wrong.” – Elon Musk
